Cool Things for Cool People: April 2024

Welcome to another installment of Cool Things for Cool People, hoping to make your inbox (and your day) a little more interesting. Don’t forget you can submit your own cool thing using the cool things form!

Donate your Eclipse Glasses

I hope if you were able to enjoy the eclipse you got to do so. The next eclipse you will be able to see in the US is August 23, 2044, so mark your calendars. In the meantime, you might not want to hang on to your eclipse glasses. Eclipse Glasses USA will take gently worn pairs of glasses to distribute to school children. Read more about how to donate by visiting their site. Please thoroughly read their criteria for donation as many Chinese-manufactured glasses cannot be donated, and the market was quite saturated with them this year. Thank you for your generosity!

Pintopia 2 – 2024 Still Happening

Pintopia 2

Pintopia 2 is just starting to wind down on BackerKit and almost all projects are funded. There are a ton of cool pins and projects including my own project, which has four styles of pins and will also benefit the Wolf Conservation Center in New York. Check out all the pins – there’s everything from D&D pins, to magical girl pins, to dragons, to food, retro, and more!

Jimmy Fallon & Paul Rudd do Dead or Alive

This video was submitted to me as a cool thing (Thanks Mother Suspiria!) but I had watched it previously and was positively mesmerized by the accuracy to the original Dead or Alive video this is. It’s definitely a fun watch and wildly entertaining.

Kaffee & Kunst (Coffee & Art) is being held in May in Magdeburg

Kaffee & Kunst (Coffee and Art for English speakers) is being held in May by artist Pauline Lendrich. The next session is May 4th of 2024 and coincides with Star Wars day and takes place in Magdeburg, Germany. Get cozy with a small assortment of artists and participate in the drawing sessions to hone your craft, regardless of your skill level. The entry price is an entirely reasonable amount of money (30) which helps to cover real life figure models and some of the drawing materials. Learn more on Pauline’s website, or schedule right away on Eventbrite.

Thisissand

Sand-like painting of mountains.

A sandbox on your computer? You heard right. Make some satisfying sand art with your computer, and then share it with others. My sand artwork wasn’t massively impressive, but I did play with it for way longer than I should have.
